There is a good study on geese telling individuals apart. It is not about you.
That sentence is the whole article, but the details are worth having, because the study is unusually clean and because the two things a goose actually does to a person both have better explanations than memory of a face.
The short answer

- Yes, and there is a 2024 paper with numbers. The individuals being told apart are other geese

- No experiment we could open has tested it. The designs that produced the crow and gull results have not been run on a goose

- Two reasons, and neither is your face. One is imprinting, which happens in the first days of life. The other is nest season, which is about a place and a date

- The Graylag Goose of Europe. The bird on an American lawn is usually the Canada Goose, which is a different genus
The study that put a number on goose recognition
A team working with the free flying Graylag flock in Austria asked a narrow question. Is there enough information in a goose face to identify that individual, and do the geese themselves use it.
The first half was a software problem. They took 516 photographs, built two sets of 110 images each, and ran an algorithm on bill shape alone against every possible pairing inside each set, which came to just under 6000 comparisons per set.

- 98.4 percent accuracy from the bill alone, across 89 birds
- Images taken a year or more apart
- 97.1 percent accuracy, across 84 birds
- What that means
- A goose face carries stable identity information that survives a year of aging. That is a fact about the bird, not yet a fact about what the bird notices
- What it does not mean
- That geese use bills the way the software does. The authors say plainly that the birds likely use other traits too
What the geese did in front of a photograph
The second half is the part that makes the paper. They printed life sized goose photos, roughly 840 by 1180 millimeters, mounted them on boards, and put them out at five locations in front of 111 free flying geese.

Four kinds of board went out. A blank control, 72 trials. A photo of a flock mate, 68 trials. A photo of the bird partner, 11 trials. A photo of the bird itself, 12 trials. They measured how long a goose took to approach, how close it got, how long it fed within a meter, how many contact call bouts it gave, and the postures that mean the opposite of friendly, including hissing and pecking.
The partner boards drew significantly warmer behavior than the flock mate boards and than the blank control. That is a real result and the paper reports it as significant.
It is also 11 trials. The authors flag the small sample for the partner and self conditions themselves. A cautious reading is that geese appear to respond to the face of the bird they are bonded to, on a sample small enough that the next study matters.
Imprinting is not the same thing
Nearly every page that answers yes to this question reaches for Konrad Lorenz and the line of goslings walking behind him. It is a real phenomenon and he won a Nobel Prize in 1973 for the body of work it belongs to. It is also not recognition in the sense people mean here.
- What imprinting is
- A bird hatched without a parent present follows the first suitable moving thing it sees. Lorenz showed it could be a person, and later work showed it could be a colored ball
- When it happens
- In the first hours and days after hatching, and then the window closes
- What it tells you about the bird
- Almost nothing about memory or judgment. The gosling is not deciding you are trustworthy. A slot marked parent was open and you walked past it
- Why it gets used as evidence anyway
- Because the picture is unforgettable and the caption writes itself. A goose following a man looks exactly like a goose that knows the man
An imprinted goose does end up attached to one specific human. So in a loose sense it recognizes that person. But it is the same loose sense in which a duckling recognizes a pair of boots, and it has nothing to say about the wild goose on your lawn, which hatched under a goose.
The goose hissing at you in April
This is the encounter that generates the question. You walk the same route you always walk, and one goose lowers its head, opens its bill, and comes at you. It feels personal. It is a calendar.

- Who is doing it
- Cornell describes the male guarding the nest while the female incubates. The bird coming at you is doing a job
- Where the nest is
- On slightly elevated ground near water, chosen by the female. That is why the aggression has a center and a radius
- How long it lasts
- Incubation runs 25 to 28 days. The young then need 42 to 50 more. The behavior tracks that window
- What the display looks like
- Head pumping, bill open with the tongue raised, hissing, honking, and neck feathers vibrating. If the intruder does not back off, fights happen and birds get hurt
- What it is not
- A judgment about you specifically. Walk the same path in September and nothing happens
Why it is your lawn
Geese did not wander onto mowed grass by accident. Cornell gives two reasons and both are mechanical.
- They can digest it
- Grasses and sedges are food. Most birds cannot make a living on a lawn. A goose can
- They can see across it
- Short grass gives clear sightlines for spotting a predator while raising young. A lawn is a cafeteria with good visibility
- Where that concentrates them
- Parks, airports and golf courses, which is to say every large flat mowed area we build
- The trend
- Cornell reports the population growing more than 7 percent a year between 1966 and 2019. Two subspecies now graze our grass year round
What nobody has run on a goose
The reason this article cannot say yes is specific. The results people are thinking of when they ask came from experiments with a particular shape, and that shape has not been pointed at a goose.
- The mask design
- Trap a bird while wearing an arbitrary mask, then walk past later wearing the same mask and a different one. That is the crow work and it is why crow recognition is not a story but a measurement
- The gaze design
- Approach with a food item while looking at the bird or looking away, and time the approach. That is the gull work
- The photograph design
- Show trained birds images of specific people. That is where the pigeon results come from
- What exists for geese
- A face study on goose faces, and a lot of confident sentences with no method behind them
If a pair has claimed your yard
- Work out where the nest is before you do anything else. The aggression has a center. Slightly elevated ground near water is the description to look for.
- Change your route, not the bird. A wider arc around that center costs you nothing and ends most of the problem for the ten or eleven weeks it lasts.
- Do not turn and run. Back away facing the bird. Cornell describes the display escalating when an intruder does not retreat, and a retreat it can see is what stops it.
- Stop feeding them, including the neighbors. Fed geese stay. A pair that nested once will try the same spot again.
- Let the calendar run. Nests and eggs are federally protected. The window ends on its own, and in most yards that is the entire management plan.
What this means for a yard with water
Geese and garden water features mostly do not overlap, and that is worth saying plainly rather than pretending otherwise. A goose wants open water it can land on and grass it can walk to. A pedestal bird bath is neither. If you have geese and a bird bath, the geese are there for the lawn and the pond, not the basin.
Where it does matter is placement. A basin sited at the edge of a large mowed lawn near open water is sitting in goose traffic, which means goose droppings on and around it, which means you are cleaning it far more often than the birds using it would justify. The fix is the ordinary one, covered in the placement guide. Put the basin near cover, not out in the open grass. The songbirds you want prefer that anyway, and the geese have no reason to walk over.
Frequently asked questions
Do geese remember people who feed them
They clearly learn that a location and a situation produce food, and they will approach people in that context. Whether they are tracking the person or the context has not been separated by an experiment, and separating those two is exactly what the mask and gaze designs were built to do.
Do geese hold grudges
The grudge results belong to crows and ravens, and they came from years of controlled follow up. You can read what those actually measured in the crow article and the raven article. Nothing equivalent exists for geese.
Will the goose that chased me remember me next year
Unknown, and probably the wrong question. It will very likely nest in the same area next year, because geese reuse sites and mate for life. That produces the same experience without requiring the bird to remember your face.
Is the Canada Goose the same bird as the study bird
No. The face study used Graylag Geese in Austria. It is a reasonable bet that a Canada Goose face carries similar information, but that is a bet, not a finding. This is the same name trap that runs through the magpie question.
Are geese smart
They mate for life with very low separation rates, keep their young through the first year, and respond differently to a picture of their own partner. That is a real social life. It is a different claim from face recognition of humans, and the honest position is to make the first claim and not the second.
