Cleaning the impeller of a tabletop fountain pump with a toothbrush

How to Clean a Tabletop Fountain in 15 Minutes (Step-by-Step Guide)

A tabletop fountain is meant to be a source of Zen, but there is nothing relaxing about green slime, cloudy water, or a noisy pump.

Over time, dust, pet hair, and algae will inevitably build up in your fountain. To keep it running silently and looking pristine, you should give it a "Deep Clean" once a month.

Here is exactly how to do it in 4 simple steps.

Step 1: Safety & Disassembly

Don't scrub while plugged in!

  1. Unplug: Always disconnect the fountain from the power outlet first.

  2. Drain: Pour the old water into a sink (not on your plants, if you used anti-algae chemicals).

  3. Take Apart: Remove the river rocks, the decorative tiers, and the pump. You want to expose the empty basin.

Step 2: Scrub the Basin & Rocks

Banishing the slime.

  1. The Solution: Mix warm water with a mild dish soap or distilled white vinegar. Avoid harsh bleach, which can damage the fountain's finish.

  2. The Scrub: Use a soft sponge or a non-abrasive cloth to wipe down the inside of the basin.

  3. The Rocks: Place the river rocks in a colander and rinse them under hot running water. If they have green algae on them, soak them in a vinegar-water mix for 10 minutes, then scrub with an old toothbrush.

Step 3: Clean the Pump (Crucial Step!)

Scrubbing algae off a tabletop fountain basin

Most people skip this, and their pump dies. The pump is a magnet for debris.

  1. Open it: Most small fountain pumps have a removable faceplate. Pop it off (it usually snaps off).

  2. Clean the Impeller: Inside, you will see a small fan-like part (the impeller). Use a Q-tip or a toothbrush to clean out any hair, slime, or mineral grit trapped inside.

  3. Rinse: Flush it with high-pressure water from the tap to clear the blockage.

Step 4: Reassemble & Refill

Start fresh.

  1. Put it back together: Reconnect the pump to the tubing and place the rocks back in.

  2. The Water: Refill with fresh, clean water.

    • Tip: This is the perfect time to switch to Distilled Water to prevent future scrubbing. See why in our guide: Tap Water vs. Distilled.

  3. Treatment: Add a few drops of scale preventer or algae control to keep it cleaner for longer.

Conclusion

A clean fountain is a quiet fountain. By spending just 15 minutes a month on maintenance, you ensure your water stays crystal clear and your pump lasts for years.
