Many garden enthusiasts want to refresh their faded bird baths, but the most common concern is: will it be harmful to the birds?
The answer is simple: Yes, you can paint a bird bath, but safety must come first.
Choose paint for the area you want to repaint
We recommend treating the outside and the water-holding basin separately. For the pedestal and outside of the bowl, choose an exterior paint suitable for the material and existing finish. For the basin, check that the coating is specifically suitable for bird baths and standing water. “Water-based,” “non-toxic,” or “food-safe” on the label alone does not confirm this.
Clean first, then check the finish
All our products are painted with environmentally friendly water-based paint before leaving the factory. For routine cleaning of our original finish, we recommend one part white vinegar to nine parts water. Gently scrub with a soft brush, then rinse thoroughly.
Repainting needs additional preparation. Check the new coating’s instructions for removing loose paint, sanding and drying. Do not strip an intact finish just to clean it.
Apply and cure before refilling
Follow the chosen coating’s application and recoating instructions. Add a primer or sealer only if the instructions require it and confirm that the products work together. A clear sealer does not automatically make decorative paint suitable for the basin.
Before adding water, follow the coating’s full-cure requirements for water contact. A dry surface or no noticeable smell is not enough to confirm that it is ready.
