European Guardian, Not a Fu Dog
A seated lion on a rectangular plinth, front legs straight, head level and forward. The mane is carved in overlapping locks that run deep enough to hold shadow, and the face is naturalistic rather than stylised.
This is the western tradition, the kind that flanks the steps of a bank or a country house. It is not the Chinese guardian lion, which sits differently, has a very different mane, and usually comes with a ball or a cub under one paw.
The finish is aged grey green with darker tones settled into the mane and the plinth edges. At 22.8 inches it works singly beside a door or as a pair at the foot of steps.
What Makes This Piece Different
- The western guardian form, which is a specific thing. Seated upright with straight forelegs, a naturalistic face and a mane in overlapping locks. Chinese guardian lions sit lower, have a curled stylised mane and usually hold a ball or a cub.
