A rock fountain where the ledges sit flush lets the water cling to the stone all the way down. What you get is a wet rock face. A rock fountain where the ledges overhang throws the water clear, and what you see is six separate falls with daylight visible behind each one.
That is the whole difference between this and most of the category, and it is a structural decision rather than a decorative one. Each of the six ledges cantilevers out past the one below it, which is also why the piece is nearly twenty inches long at the base. It needs the footprint to carry the overhangs.
