It also works as a counterpoint in a heavily planted garden that needs somewhere for the eye to rest. It does not suit a cottage border or a rustic setting, where a plain grey pedestal reads as out of place.
Will birds use it?
Birds do drink from and bathe in shallow bowl fountains, and the wide rim here gives them somewhere to stand. That said, this is a fountain rather than a bird bath. It has no feeder, the water is recirculating, and the depth is set for flow rather than for birds.

The one rule worth remembering
The pump has to stay under water. Everything else on this page is preference, but a pump that runs dry is a pump you replace. In warm weather a basin can drop below the line in a few days, so top it up before it gets close rather than after.

Drain it before the first hard freeze and store the pump dry indoors. Water left to freeze and thaw is what does the damage, not the cold itself.
