Two Bowls, Two Birds, No Waiting
A black bear lies on its back with one bowl on its belly and one alongside, set at different heights and usable at the same time. Water in one, seed in the other.
That saves you a feeder stake. In most gardens the bath ends up in one place and the feeder in another, and the feeder always ends up wherever there was room rather than wherever you can see it. One base, one decision.
Fifteen inches is the posture, not a size cut. The bear is reclining, so both bowls sit close to the ground. Sparrows, robins and thrushes forage in leaf litter all day and routinely ignore a waist high basin. Put the bowls where they already are and a different set of birds turns up.
What Makes This Bird Bath Different
- Water and seed on one base. Birds that come to drink find the food, and birds that come to eat find the water. You choose one position instead of two, and it can be the position you actually see from indoors rather than the one that happened to have space.
- Fill to two inches, not to the brim. At that depth it reads to a bird as warm shallow water. Sparrows stand in it and beat their wings, robins get half their body in and shake water everywhere. Filled to the top it becomes a drinking stop and nothing more.
- Low because the bear is lying down. Ground foragers approach low water readily. The same bowls at waist height would bring a different, smaller crowd.
- Concrete, not resin dressed as stone. Real weight keeps it in place, and a sealed surface comes through freeze and thaw year after year once it is drained.
Leave two feet of open ground on every side so birds can see what is coming, and keep a shrub or low branch within a short flight so there is somewhere to bolt to. Bowls close to the ground are also close to the cat, which is the trade for attracting ground feeders. The best spot is usually whatever you can see from the window you stand at.

Setup, Care, and Warranty
Setup and placement
Two pieces, no tools, about five minutes. Set it on level solid ground.
Turn the bear to face the way people come from. From behind it is a dark shape and nothing else.
Filling it
Two inches is the number. Birds wade rather than swim and will not step into anything deeper. Shallow water also warms faster in spring, which brings them back sooner.
Keeping it clean
Seed and water together bring more traffic and more mess. Hulls travel into the water bowl and a film forms within a day, so rinse the water side more often than you would a standalone bath. Clean the two separately.
Winter
Empty both bowls before the first hard frost. Sealed concrete handles freeze and thaw well when dry. This piece sits low, so check that water is not pooling around the base either.

Questions Before You Choose
Can both bowls be used at once?
Yes, they work independently. Clean them separately though, since food residue in the water bowl turns it within a day.
Why is this one lower than the upright bear designs?
The bear is reclining rather than standing, which brings the whole piece to 15 inches and both bowls near ground level. That suits ground foraging birds, which is the point.
Will birds actually use it?
Depth and rim decide it. Both bowls are shallow dishes with rims wide enough to stand on, which is what a bird checks before committing. Fill to two inches, keep the approach open, and have cover within a short flight.
Is it safe around dogs?
The concrete weight makes it stable and there is nothing to pull off. Both bowls are within easy reach at this height, so a dog will drink from the water side. Worth keeping in mind if yours eats anything it finds.
Every garden has food in it somewhere. Most have no water at all.
None of this is particular to our bird baths. It is true of any backyard, and it is the reason a basin of clean water changes who visits your garden.
Water is used year round
Birds drink and bathe in every season, including the weeks when puddles and shallow ponds are frozen over.
Two inches, no more
Songbirds bathe standing up. A basin deeper than roughly two inches at the centre gets looked at and left alone.
Ten feet from cover
A wet bird is a slow bird. Put the bath near a shrub or a low branch and it gets used; strand it in open lawn and it does not.
Tall enough to be safe. Shallow enough to be used.
Height is not decoration. A pedestal lifts the basin above a cat's easy reach, and puts it at eye level from a kitchen window instead of lost in the planting. The basin slopes as well. It stays shallow at the rim and drops a little toward the centre, so a small bird can stand at the edge and a larger one can stand in the middle.

Still water, or moving water.
Still
Out of the box it is a basin of standing water, which is all most birds ask for. Fill it, change it every few days, done. No cord, no pump, nothing to fail.
Moving
Add a solar fountain kit and the surface breaks. Moving water carries further than a still basin and keeps mosquitoes from settling. It sits in the basin, so there is no drilling and no wiring.
Three habits, and it outlives the garden bed.
A bird bath does not need much. Almost every one that fails does so for one of two reasons. Either water was left in it through a freeze, or a detergent stripped the surface. Avoid both and the rest is rinsing.
Rinse and refill every few days in warm weather. A tip and a hose is enough.
Scrub with a stiff brush and diluted white vinegar when algae shows. No detergent and no bleach, since both leave residue birds will drink.
Empty it before the first hard frost, or keep it moving with a de-icer. Water left to freeze is the one thing the warranty can't undo.
