A Disc Standing in a Bowl, and Nothing Else

Two shapes. A hemisphere, and a disc standing in it. The disc carries a recessed circular panel with fine horizontal ribbing, and the water comes down that panel into the bowl. There is no tier, no spout, no ornament and no second color.

The surface is where the interest is. It is cream cement with the aggregate left showing rather than sanded smooth, so up close you read brown and white flecks scattered through a pale ground, the way a poured terrazzo does. From ten feet it is a warm sandy tone. From two it has grit and depth.

Cream is also doing work that gray cannot. Nearly every modern concrete fountain is a cool gray that sits against gray paving and quietly disappears. A warm cream reads against stone, against a dark fence and against green planting, which is most of what is likely to be around it.
