RESIN BIRD BATH

Green All the Way Through

Solid verdigris, not aged bronze with green in the recesses. The colour runs across the whole piece evenly, which is unusual and which is why it reads as a single object rather than as a finish applied to one.

The base is pierced with a fleur de lis pattern, so light passes through it and the piece does not sit on a solid disc. The basin has a radial pattern with a band of beading around the rim.

Four point seven pounds. A balcony with a load limit, a timber deck, a roof terrace, a rented garden. Concrete goes in none of those and this goes in all of them.

What Makes This Bird Bath Different

  • One colour throughout rather than a two tone antique effect. Most verdigris finishes are bronze with green worked into the recesses, which reads as a treatment rather than a material. This is green across the whole piece, top to base, so it looks like one thing rather than a thing with a finish on it. Against a lawn or dark planting that solid colour holds its shape at a distance.
  • A pierced base, not a solid disc. The fleur de lis pattern is cut through, so grass and gravel show under it and the piece sits lighter on the ground than its footprint suggests.
  • Under five pounds. Carry it out with one hand, try three positions in an afternoon, take it in for winter without help. That is a different relationship with a garden object than concrete allows.
  • Fill to two inches, not to the brim. At that depth chickadees stand on the beaded rim and sip, robins get right in. Filled to the top it becomes a drinking stop.
Where to put it

Against a wall, a hedge or within planting rather than free standing in open wind, since under five pounds it will move in a gust. Balconies, decks, courtyards and small paved gardens all suit it. Twenty seven inches puts the basin at a safe height. Leave open ground on the approach side and keep cover within a short flight.

Setup, Care, and Warranty

Setup and placement

Assembly is required and takes no tools. Set it on level solid ground.

At under five pounds, place it against something solid rather than free standing in an open position.

Filling it

Two inches is the number. Birds wade rather than swim. Water also adds useful weight to a light piece, so keeping it filled helps it stay put.

Keeping the colour even

Rinse and wipe with a soft cloth. Solid verdigris shows water marks more than a mottled antique finish would, so a wipe after heavy rain keeps it looking flat and even.

Winter

Drain the basin before the first hard frost. Resin does not crack the way concrete does, but at this weight it is easy to bring inside for the season.

3 year warranty

This product includes a 3 year warranty. Coverage, claim requirements and required documents are subject to the warranty policy that applies at the time of purchase. Keep your order confirmation and contact customer support with your order details if service is needed.

Questions Before You Choose

Is it metal?

Resin with a solid verdigris colour. It gives the aged copper look at under five pounds, which is the reason it works on a balcony or a deck.

Will it blow over?

At 4.7 pounds it needs shelter. Against a wall, a hedge or within planting it holds. Free standing on an open terrace it does not. Keeping it filled helps.

Why is the base pierced?

The fleur de lis pattern is cut through rather than moulded on, so light and ground show through it. It also keeps the base from reading as a heavy solid disc under a light piece.

Will birds actually use it?

The beaded rim gives them something to stand on and the basin is shallow by design. Fill to two inches, keep the approach open, and have cover within a short flight.

Why water, not seed

Every garden has food in it somewhere. Most have no water at all.

None of this is particular to our bird baths. It is true of any backyard, and it is the reason a basin of clean water changes who visits your garden.

Water is used year round

Birds drink and bathe in every season, including the weeks when puddles and shallow ponds are frozen over.

Two inches, no more

Songbirds bathe standing up. A basin deeper than roughly two inches at the centre gets looked at and left alone.

Ten feet from cover

A wet bird is a slow bird. Put the bath near a shrub or a low branch and it gets used; strand it in open lawn and it does not.

Size and scale

Tall enough to be safe. Shallow enough to be used.

Height is not decoration. A pedestal lifts the basin above a cat's easy reach, and puts it at eye level from a kitchen window instead of lost in the planting. The basin slopes as well. It stays shallow at the rim and drops a little toward the centre, so a small bird can stand at the edge and a larger one can stand in the middle.

Fill it to about two inches. That is shallow on purpose, and it is also why it empties and refills in seconds. Exact height and basin width for this piece are in the specifications further down.

How a bird bath is meant to sit. Exact dimensions vary by model.
Two ways to run it

Still water, or moving water.

Still

Out of the box it is a basin of standing water, which is all most birds ask for. Fill it, change it every few days, done. No cord, no pump, nothing to fail.

Nothing to plug in.

Moving

Add a solar fountain kit and the surface breaks. Moving water carries further than a still basin and keeps mosquitoes from settling. It sits in the basin, so there is no drilling and no wiring.

Care card · keep with the garden tools
Spring
Scrub off the winter film before the first nesting birds arrive.
Summer
Refill every two or three days. Warm shallow water turns fast.
Autumn
Lift out fallen leaves before they sit and stain the basin.
Winter
Empty it before the first hard frost. Ice expanding is what cracks a basin.
Everyday care

Three habits, and it outlives the garden bed.

A bird bath does not need much. Almost every one that fails does so for one of two reasons. Either water was left in it through a freeze, or a detergent stripped the surface. Avoid both and the rest is rinsing.

01

Rinse and refill every few days in warm weather. A tip and a hose is enough.

02

Scrub with a stiff brush and diluted white vinegar when algae shows. No detergent and no bleach, since both leave residue birds will drink.

03

Empty it before the first hard frost, or keep it moving with a de-icer. Water left to freeze is the one thing the warranty can't undo.
