Why fluted rims instead of smooth
Smooth rims drop one continuous sheet. Fluted rims split it into dozens of narrow threads, which looks like texture rather than a curtain and sounds finer. It is the whole reason to pick this over a plain concrete tiered fountain.
Does it have lights
No, and there is no wiring for them. If you want it visible after dark, a low voltage spotlight aimed up from the base lights falling water well. We also carry fountains with the lighting built in if you would rather not add anything.
How hard is it to set up
The tiers stack, so assemble it where it is going to live rather than carrying it assembled. Level the ground, seat the base, stack the bowls, drop the pump in and fill with a hose. One standard outdoor outlet runs it.
Will it survive winter outside
Drain the bowls and the basin before the first hard frost and store the pump dry indoors. Water freezing inside concrete is very nearly the only thing that damages a piece like this. A cover helps in wet climates but is not needed if it is properly drained.
