A Circle Cut Clean Through the Stone
The circle is a moon gate, the round doorway cut through a garden wall in Chinese gardens, and the reason it works on a fountain is the same reason it works on a wall. A hole in a solid shape frames whatever is behind it and changes as you move past it.
Here the opening sits at the top of a rectangular dark stone frame and is lit from within, so in daylight you look through it at the planting or the fence beyond, and after dark it becomes a glowing ring. Below it three stepped channels carry the water down into the basin, so the bottom two thirds of the piece is movement and the top third is the circle.
Fourteen by ten and a half inches at the base, thirty eight and a half pounds. That weight on that footprint means it stands firmly without anything holding it down, which matters on a piece with an opening cut through it.
