A Cut in the Barrel, and a Metal Panel Behind It

A barrel on its own is a shape, not a fountain. What makes this one work is the cut. A curved section is taken out of the front face, and behind it sits a ribbed metal panel running the full height of the opening. Water leaves a spout at the top, crosses that panel, and comes down it as an even sheet into the base.

So you get two materials doing opposite things. Weathered timber staves and dark steel hoops on the outside, aged and rough. A clean ribbed metal panel inside the cut, catching light. The barrel is the frame and the panel is the picture.

The panel comes in silver or copper, which is the one choice to make before ordering. Silver reads cooler and more industrial against the timber. Copper reads warmer and sits closer to the wood. Warm light sits at the spout and at the base, so after dark the top of the sheet and the bottom of it are both lit and the panel glows between them.

Should I pick silver or copper
Silver reads cooler and more industrial against the weathered timber, and suits gray paving, painted siding and steel. Copper is warmer and sits closer to the wood tone, and suits brick, terracotta and planting. Both are ribbed the same way.
Is the barrel real wood
It is resin cast as aged timber staves with steel toned hoops. Real wood holding water outdoors becomes a maintenance problem within a couple of seasons. The cast version keeps the grain and the hoops without the rot.
