Cast rock is almost always gray. Mid gray, warm gray, weathered gray, but gray. This one is dark charcoal with layered strata worked through it, and that changes what it does in a space. Gray rock disappears into gray paving. Charcoal reads against it, and it reads much harder against green planting or a pale wall.
It also changes the lighting. Warm light under a charcoal ledge has somewhere dark to sit against, so the lit water is the brightest thing on the piece by a wide margin. On a pale gray fountain the stone competes with the water.
Several short ledges rather than a few tall drops, which gives a finer continuous sound, and at twenty five and a half inches by eight and three quarter deep it is a genuinely compact piece. Fourteen and a quarter pounds, so one hand moves it.
