A chute set flat sends water down the front of a column, where it clings to the surface and what you see is a wet stripe. A chute tilted forward throws the water clear of the face, so it falls through air into the one below and you see four distinct falls with daylight behind them.
That is the only structural idea in the piece and it is enough, because it changes what a narrow column fountain looks like. Dark gray stone texture, four chutes, and warm light sitting inside each one so the falling water is lit from behind after dark.
