Tall Enough to See, Low Enough to Sit Beside

What 30 to 48 inches actually looks like

Thirty inches is about the height of a dining table. Forty-eight is about the height of a kitchen bar. Everything in this collection falls between those two, and most of it lands near 39 inches, a little above a standard counter. That is the height where a fountain stops being an object on the ground and starts being something you notice from a window. It is also the last height at which one person can still reach into the basin to clean it without kneeling.

Where a fountain this size goes

Against a wall, beside a door, at the end of a path, in the gap between two planted beds. The tall narrow pieces suit a side return or the strip between a fence and a walkway, where a wide low fountain would have nowhere to sit. On a deck or a porch the same height reads differently again, because the floor is already raised and the fountain comes up nearer to eye level. Think about what is behind it as much as what is around it. A pale wall or a clipped hedge gives the falling water something to read against.

The sound comes from the drop

A fountain makes sound because water falls a distance and lands on something. At 30 inches the fall is short and the sound is closer to a trickle. At 45 inches, especially on a piece with several shelves, the water falls further and the sound carries across a patio. Multi tier pieces break the fall into several small ones, which tends to read as softer and more continuous than one long drop into a deep basin. If you want to sit next to it and still hold a conversation, the lower half of this range is the safer choice.

After dark

Most of the fountains here have warm LED built in. It is usually set under the rim of a bowl or behind the sheet of falling water, so what you see is lit water rather than a visible bulb. That matters more at this height than it does at tabletop size, because a 40 inch fountain is tall enough to become the only lit thing in a dark yard. A few pieces in the collection have no lighting, which is the right call if the fountain sits where you already have path or wall lights.

Resin, concrete and metal at this height

Most of this range is cast resin. Resin holds fine detail, takes an aged stone or weathered bronze finish, and is lighter than stone of the same size, so the spot is not a permanent decision. Concrete gives real mass and a dense mineral surface that weathers slowly, and it stays put in an open windy yard without help. Metal sits somewhere between, with cut and folded faces that resin cannot do. None of the three is better. It comes down to whether you want the weight or the finish, and whether you expect to move the piece again.

Setting one up and keeping it running

Every fountain here comes with its pump, and the water recirculates inside the piece, so there is nothing to plumb. Set it level, fill the basin, plug it in. Level matters more than people expect, because a piece leaning half an inch will throw water off one side. In summer, top the water up as it evaporates. Before the first hard freeze, drain the basin and bring the pump inside.

Before You Order a Medium Outdoor Fountain

How tall is a medium outdoor fountain
In this collection it means 30 to 48 inches. The shortest is a little over 30 inches and the tallest is just under 48. Most sit close to 39 inches, which is a few inches above a kitchen counter. Anything under 30 inches is in the small collection and anything four feet and over is in the large one.
What size fountain should I put next to a patio chair
Between 30 and 36 inches the top of the fountain sits roughly level with the shoulder of someone sitting down, so it stays part of the scene rather than blocking it. From 36 to 48 inches it rises past the back of the chair and becomes the thing you look at. Both work. It depends on whether you want it in the conversation or at the end of it.
Is a 40 inch fountain too big for a small patio
Height is rarely the problem on a small patio. Footprint is. Pieces in this range are usually under two feet across at the base, and the tall narrow ones are narrower than that, so a 40 inch fountain often takes less floor than a 30 inch bowl on a wide plinth. Measure the width you have before you decide on the height.
Do fountains this size come with a pump
Yes. Every fountain in this collection includes its pump. The water recirculates inside the piece, so there is no plumbing to run. You fill the basin, plug it in, and top the water up as it evaporates.
Do they have lights
Most of them do. Warm LED is built into the majority of the range, usually set under the lip of a bowl or behind the falling water rather than pointed at you. A smaller number have no lighting at all. The product page for each piece says which it is.
How do I get a fountain this size through winter
Drain it before the first hard freeze. Water left in a basin expands when it freezes and that is what damages a fountain, not the cold itself. Take the pump out, rinse it and keep it somewhere frost free. Cover the piece or move it under shelter if you can. A fountain in this size range is small enough that moving it indoors for the winter is realistic in a way it is not at four feet and up.
