An Outdoor Water Fountain That Runs the Day It Arrives

What an outdoor water fountain needs from you
Less than people expect. Every fountain on this page arrives with its pump already inside, and the water it runs on is the water you pour in. It recirculates, so there is no supply line to connect, nothing to bury, and no plumber to book.
What it needs is one ordinary outdoor outlet and a level spot. Assembly is tool free: the pieces stack, the cord tucks down the back, you fill the basin and switch it on. A self contained fountain is exactly what it sounds like, and it is the reason one of these can be running the afternoon it arrives.

Height, and the spot it has to hold
The range here runs from tabletop pieces to over six feet tall, and height is the decision that matters most, because a fountain has to be in scale with the ground around it. Under about 36 inches on an open patio and the piece gets swallowed by the space. A large water fountain at 42 inches or more holds a corner on its own and gives the eye somewhere to land.
Small does not mean weak, it means a smaller job. A fountain for small patio use, on a step, a balcony or beside a bench, is meant to be heard from three feet away rather than seen from thirty. Pick the height from the spot, then pick the shape.

Resin or concrete
Both are cast the same way, poured into a mold, and the choice between them is about where the piece lives rather than about quality. Resin holds fine cast detail, comes in stone, slate and copper tones, and stays light enough that one or two people can set it down on a deck or a courtyard and move it again later.
Concrete is the heavier answer for a spot you have already decided on. A cast stone fountain carries real mass, sits through wind without help, and softens outdoors over two or three seasons into something that looks like it grew there. Both recirculate the same way and both take the same pump.
The shapes, and what each one sounds like
Shape decides sound. A tiered fountain drops water in short falls from one bowl to the next, which is the steady rinsing note most people picture. Stacked rock and slate break the flow into many small streams and read closer to a creek. A wall fountain sends a thin sheet down a flat face, quieter and more even. A pedestal fountain lifts a single bowl to standing height, so the sound arrives at ear level instead of from the ground.
Louder is not better. Match the note to the distance you will hear it from, and to whatever it has to compete with, a road, a neighbor, an air conditioner.

The ones that stay on after dark
Many of these have LED lighting built in, and it changes what the piece does with its evening. An outdoor fountain with lights puts the glow inside the falling water rather than on it, so after sunset you see the movement itself instead of a lit object. The warm tones read as lamplight, not as a pool feature.
There is nothing separate to wire. A water fountain with led lights runs the pump and the lights from the same cord and the same outlet, and most switch together, so the evening version of the piece costs you one plug.

Winter, and the one thing that breaks a fountain
Water left in a basin freezes, expands, and splits whatever is holding it. That is very nearly the only way one of these fails, and it takes about ten minutes to prevent. Before the first hard frost, drain every bowl and the base, unplug the pump and store it dry indoors, and let the piece dry out before you cover it.
After that a resin piece is easiest brought under shelter and a concrete one can stay where it is under a breathable cover. Nothing else about the off season needs attention.
