Four Feet Is Where a Fountain Starts Holding a View

How tall is tall enough
Height is the one thing you cannot adjust after delivery, and it is the thing people get wrong most often. The useful way to pick it is by viewing distance rather than by the number.
Under four feet, a fountain is something you come upon. You notice it when you are within a few steps. From the far side of a lawn it reads as a shape in the planting.
At four feet and up it starts holding a view on its own. You see it from the kitchen window, from the far end of a terrace, from the gate. That is the whole reason to buy into this range, and it is why nothing on this page comes in under four feet.
Above six feet it stops being an object in the garden and becomes the thing the garden is arranged around. A few pieces here do that. Be certain about the position before one arrives.

Concrete or resin, and at this height it decides more than looks
In the smaller ranges this is mostly a question of finish. At four feet and up it decides weight, delivery, lighting and whether you can ever move the thing.
The cast concrete pieces here are solid through. They arrive in parts and are assembled where they will stand, they need two people at least, and none of them has lighting or any wiring for it. What you get in return is real mass and a surface that takes on patina outdoors instead of staying exactly as it left the factory.
The resin pieces are cast hollow. One or two people can place them, they usually arrive as a single piece, and every one of them has lighting built in. The trade is that the finish holds the tone it arrived with rather than developing one.
There is no better answer. Concrete if you want permanence and patina and do not care about light. Resin if you want it lit, and want to be able to change your mind about where it goes.

Weight, and why none of these need a foundation
A quarried stone fountain at five feet needs a poured pad and equipment to set. That is a landscaping job with a contractor attached, and it is the reason most people never end up with one.
Nothing here works that way. The heaviest piece on the page is a hundred and two and a half pounds, and it stands on level ground with nothing holding it down. The concrete pieces are heavier in feel than their numbers suggest because they arrive in parts, so no single lift is the whole weight.
What all of them do need is level ground. At this height a small tilt is visible, and on the pieces where water crosses a rim or a cut chute it shows immediately as an uneven fall. Check it with a level rather than by eye, and do it before you fill the basin, because a filled fountain at this size is not something you nudge.

Lit, or dark by design
Every resin piece here is lit and no concrete piece is. That split is not an accident of stock, it is what the two materials allow.
The lighting on these is worth more than it sounds, because at four feet and up the lit part is high enough to be seen from indoors. A lit fountain at knee height disappears behind planting after dark. At five feet it is still there through a window.
A couple go further. The six foot seven cliff piece and the fifty one inch river rock pillar both have two independent cords, so the pump and the lights switch separately. That means water in the afternoon without a lit object in your eye line, or a lit piece in the evening with the pump off so the garden is quiet.
If you want a tall concrete piece visible after dark, one or two low voltage spotlights placed forward of the base and aimed up will light falling water well. Nothing here needs to be wired in.

What four feet of falling water actually sounds like
This is the part people underestimate. Sound scales with drop height, and doubling the height of a fountain does considerably more than double what you hear.
At this size a fountain is loud enough to do a job. It covers road noise across a yard, it fills a walled courtyard, and it carries to a seating area twenty feet away. If the reason you are buying is to mask something, this is the range that does it and the smaller ranges mostly do not.
The shape decides the character. Tiered concrete bowls give you a few long clean falls and a deeper tone. Stacked rock and slate break the water into many small streams and produce a continuous rush closer to a creek. Sheet flow down a flat face is the quietest of the three, because the water stays in contact with the surface the whole way rather than falling through air.
Most of the pieces here have an adjustable pump, so you can bring the sound down. You cannot make a four foot fountain into a quiet trickle, but you can take the edge off it.

The one thing that will damage it
Not sun, not rain, not years outside. Water freezing inside the piece.
Before the first hard frost, drain the basin and every bowl or channel completely and bring the pump indoors and dry. That is the whole winter routine, and it takes ten minutes. Skipping it is how a concrete bowl cracks and how a pump dies.
Concrete pieces at this size stay where they are for the winter, drained and covered. Resin pieces can be moved under shelter if you have somewhere, which is one more argument for resin if your winters are hard.
Through the season, top the basin up every few days. Lifting water four or five feet works a pump considerably harder than a tabletop piece does, and running dry is the single most common way one of these fails.
